I was fortunate to have Brooke Baldwin and CNN contact me about the Open Letter to Sarah Palin I wrote. Click here for the Interview. While it was a short interview I was able to convey some thoughts regarding PTSD and domestic violence. Let me quickly clarify. If you have never done a media event, you don’t really have control over the content. The “PTSD Survivor” and “combat survivor” is not titles I would have chosen. While PTSD can be caused by a number of different ‘stressors’, many of the men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan have seen very, very serious combat compared to me. I was really on the fence about disclosing my diagnosis but figured if it elevated the discussion it was worth the sacrifice. Lastly, I was a bit frustrated that I could not take the opportunity to give a plug for some great organizations. Given my own background, please consider donating to The Marine Reconnaissance Foundation; Recon & Sniper Foundation; or The Raider Project.
Thank you for a concise specific response to the wailings of Sarah Palin. She, like too many people in society, want to hand off responsibility for their problems, job dilemmas and children’s problems. They want it to be “someone else’s fault.” When did we find it appropriate to make someone else responsible for our failures, difficulties? That never has led to sound parenting.
I’m dismayed at the hate and mudslinging that is rampant in the Republican candidates as well as their desire to instill bigotry, hatred, and bullying. I am a former consensus Republican appalled at the current political mudslinging with no clear proposals, solutions except unconstitutional and unviable proposals. I was foolishly hopeful, after the dismal tea party bias and bigotry, that the Republicans would find a viable, respectable candidate for a challenging election. How foolish and nearsighted they have become.
I applaud your sincere and very clear statement concerning the dilemmas posed for PTSD that exists in the military as well as clearly explaining positive actions one might take to better understand and support the problem. I hope your words very clearly are presented to the voting public. Shame on the tactics of Palin politics and Trump bullying with no concrete suggestions for support or solution.
Just watched the video! Well done!
Mr. Mark. Firstly, thank you for your service to our nation. We know the media presents/edits/sculpts their version of the story. Your frank, open letter and your televised interview on a major news channel contained useful information that citizens can use. Thank you for interjecting honesty and reality in civic discussion, so critical for our democracy!
