Please read “An Apology to Mr. Khan, Mrs. Smith & Gold Star Families”

Dear Mr. Khan,

I want to preface this letter by stating that I respect your son’s sacrifice for this great nation.  By all accounts, he is a true hero that sacrificed himself in service to our country. For that I am thankful.

As a veteran, I watched your comments at the Democratic National Convention with a mixture of sadness, and anger.  The United States has a military comprised of volunteers.  Every single member has made the conscious choice to join the military and serve.  There is not a single service member who has been forced into service.  It is important for all service members (and apparently, their families) to understand that service to this great nation does not imbue one with special privileges or rights.  I found your comments troubling when you said: “Have you ever been to Arlington cemetery? Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America. You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and no one.”

Does it matter whether Mr. Trump has sacrificed “…nothing and no one?”…has Ms. Clinton “..sacrificed” for this nation?  How about Mr. Obama?   Your comment stating that Mr. Trump “…has sacrifice no one” is alarming.  Are you intimating that YOU sacrificed?  Sir, your son willingly sacrificed himself.   As a father I cannot imagine the pain you must feel but his sacrifice is his own.  He was not forced to serve.

I am troubled that you would allow a party that has little more than contempt for the US Service Member to parade you into the DNC to denounce Donald Trump.  Did you watch when protesters at the DNC booed and heckled Medal of Honor recipient  Capt. Florent Groberg? Did you notice your party interrupting the moment of silence for slain police officers?  Your own hypocrisy in not denouncing these acts and instead using the DNC as a platform to make a political point is disgraceful.  The simple fact is that whether one served or sacrificed does not give greater power to their statements.  One vote is as valuable as another.  That sir, is why our Country is great.  Your condemnation of one person for a statement while standing idly as your party disparages veterans and police officers is the height of hypocrisy.

To conflate the need to prevent potential terrorists from entering our country with the belief that ‘all Muslims’ should be banned is simply wrong and disingenuous. As a reminder, Mr. Trump said: ” “Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life,” The irony of your son’s own death at the hands of these very people in Iraq should not be ignored.  I have little doubt that your son would have recognized the need to protect our country from these very people.  In fact, he held is own troops back so that he could check on a suspicious car.  Your son understood sacrifice and how to protect “his people”…’his soldiers’….’his fellow Americans’…

As you continue to make the media circuit and bask in the glow of affection cast upon you by a party that has little regard for your son’s own sacrifice, and veterans in general, I would ask you to consider your comments and your position more closely.

Respectfully,

Chris Mark

US Marine and Navy Veteran.

I have to agree with this letter. Our Military is solely volunteer, Nobody is holding a gun to anyone’s head to make them sign up for Military Service and the ONLY other that is sacrificing anything when a person enlists is the Spouse of the ones that are married or in a relationship. These Muslim parents kept calling out Donald Trump about what has he sacrificed, but he’s sacrificed just as much as Hillary Clinton or Bill. Just because their son died serving in the Military does not give them the right to claim that they too sacrificed anything, only their son has a right to that claim, unless he was married or in a relationship, but these parents can’t take claim that they sacrificed too in their son’s death.

hey dear Chris I appreciate your words and first of all give you respect and honor and thank you for your service as I do all military personnel. by all means the pain that the khan exhibit can only be felt buy them the loss of a child is handled differently by everyone. had Trump not responded you would be a hundred percent correct. however he had the nerve to compare building company and making job as a sacrifice compared to as you put it the Son sacrificing himself and or the pain that the parents feel beingthat they produced a son that are part of that sacrifice.
buy initially clAiming all Mexicans are rapist & banning all Muslims. Trump created the issue. he went back and cleaned up the statements which you explained correctly .however the pain of having lost a child is something that you our I know admiring about I know that Trump exhibits narcissism and selfishness and a lack and total empathy and Humanistic qualities.

Brett's avatar Brett - August 1, 2016

English…..learn it. ..use it… write with it. Moron he never said all Mexicans are rapiststill and drug dealers. He said that the ones coming across the border illegally are filled with that element. Which in case you don’t live near a border state (which I do) is the truth. Just go look at I ur jails and they are FILLED with illegals. And he wanted to stop MORE Muslims from entering this country without being vetted properly. He was also a full grown man who made the decision to go into the military to help him become a lawyer, so when said duty called he answered it faithfully and sacrificed his life. That was his choice and his sacrifice not theirs. They sit there lambasting Trump for sacrificing nothing when the Clintons have sacrificed nothing and used their political office to wield a Web of corruption. They don’t even realize how they are being used by the Democrats as a side show to avoid the email scandal.

Based on your writing abilities I’d assume you’re way more educated than myself. I’m not particularly smart or well educated, but I have learned the importance and the ability to step back and question my conclusions and motivations.

The amount of motivated reasoning and the lack of self-awareness in this letter is unfortunate. As a skilled writer and experienced service member, you no doubt have much to offer our country’s free market of ideas. For the sake of educating our country, please take some time to research cognitive bias and critical thinking.

This letter is a disgrace, much like Trump’s comments. Take a seat and listen to these awesome parental role models and everyone else like him who have lost a child in war. Yes, they obviously sacrificed because they fled a war-torn country to build a better life for their family and came here with nothing but love and hope for the future. Unless you have walked a mile or a heaven forbid, a lifetime in their shoes, you have zero right to question their position or decision to share their thoughts and feelings with anyone.

Chris Mark's avatar Chris Mark - August 1, 2016

You are wrong. When they politicize the death of their son, I am certainly within my rights to comment. I was polite, and professional. Mr. Khan could have easily made his point without dragging his son (who died 12 years prior) into the discussion.

Sharon Alden's avatar Sharon Alden - August 1, 2016

The date of CPT Khan’s death is irrelevant. The loss of a child – a clear perversion of the natural order of things, no matter how it happens – does not get “better” or easier to bear with time. Only the facade of normality grows stronger, though pain is always, ALWAYS just below the surface. I lost a daughter, so I have a kinship with them and all other parents who have lost a child or children; I do pray you never are forced to become a member of what someone called “the most exclusive club you never, ever want to join.”

That said, you cast stones from a glass house — or have you forgotten that poor, fragile, barely-together mother of one who died in Benghazi at the RNC convention? Politicized? If you say no, then you must also lay claim to hypocrisy. What we all need to remember is that no one forced either of these parents to speak … they were asked if they would and, for whatever reasons, they agreed. Leave it at that and leave them all alone.

– Retired Army LTC

Chris Mark's avatar Chris Mark - August 1, 2016

Every time we say goodbye to our deployed loved one, WE sacrifice.
We don’t want you to go, but we know it is your choice to have enlisted. We can’t let you know how scared we are. We smile when we hug you goodbye, we write upbeat letters about what’s going on at home, and smile through the tears you cannot see on the other side of the line when we get one of your precious phone calls.
But every single moment that you are away, the cold hand of fear grips our hearts. Fear of the knock at the door by two uniformed men telling us our country thanks us for your service. The fear of having to turn our blue star flag into a gold star.
Yes, we at home, who love you and wait for you to come home, sacrifice.

You are so disgraceful to the entire men of the armed forces, and the service you claimed to have given yourself to. Shame on you, if you claimed to have indeed served as a member U.S Military, and such words can be credited to you, as going to a father of a fellow serviceman who died in the course of his service to this nation, you are nothing but a born fool and a piece of trash. So this is the mindset you served the country with, the fact that service is voluntary, does that now means such individuals and their family that does not have such grace privilege like you presently have (being alive and never been unfortunate to lose your life in the course of service) should be deprived of the HONOR, GRATITUDE and RESPECT of their patriotism, loyalty, dedication, and sense of responsibility.

Your response to the Khan`s family speech shows your lack of the ethical manner and the moral character and behavior that the U.S Marine Corps and the Navy are known for. Your action, judgment, and choices of words in this your address, is nothing but a testament to the fact that you lack the true commitment to the core values of both the Marine Corps and Navy you are bragging to have served in.

If you understood the basic principles of the arms of the U.S military that you have dedicated your service to. Honor is what I know to be the bedrock of the Marine Corps character, which speaks to the need for respect for human dignity. In case you also lack the understanding of the mission you are serving with this letter, you might need to take a conscious look within yourself to realize that albeit the fact that you are expected to know better than Mr. Khan, being someone who had undergone series of leadership training, based on the opportunity that your service in the military must have accord you.

But it`s a pity that your actions here is no different from everything you accused Mr khan of, because by your words and tunes here, it is glaring that you are addressing Mr Khan not as someone who was trying to give words of advice, protect the honor of the U.S armed Forces, and hold your service and that of a late serviceman in dignity, but to act as typical republican party member, hiding behind sense of Patriotism, Christianity, Moral and Clarion calls, to seek attention and glory, perpetrate evil, impact fear, victimized others, make major out of every minor issues, interrupt progress, plant discords and disunity, and makes life difficult for others for nothing but vainglory and hypocrisy.

Chris Mark's avatar Chris Mark - August 1, 2016

The motivation comes out…”To act as typical republican party member, hiding behind sense of Patriotism, Christianity, Moral and Clarion calls, to seek attention and glory, perpetrate evil, impact fear, victimized…” So I am taking a wild guess here…you are a Hillary Clinton supporter?

These lifers mostly are in it for the money. Hell Barney and hellery couldn’t hold a civilian job long enough to get the first pay check. I hope if Trump becomes president he will hold the Clintons and Obama accountable for their illegal actions and every president afterwards will do the same. We 100% support the Military. To use a blanket statement that our party does not support the Military is wrong and inflammatory ! For example your Party likes to say the money has been cut yet my daughter has gotten a raise each of her nine years thus far. Under the Republicans we sent our troops out to fight for us without proper gear in the start of the Iraq War. Your President wore a flight suit and filed in on an Airforce jet to declare Victory? I did not serve in the military during a war but shortly thereafter. I saw first hand, the terrible and unbelievable destruction wrought by the actions of the Nazis is Germany. I patrolled the fence put up by the Communists in Czechoslovakia which was there to keep the people in and not us out. Every morning across the plowed strip, placed there to track the numbers of people fleeing, there was thirty or forty tracks over a twenty five mile stretch which we patrolled. I am going to be 76 in a few months I grew up in a country that pledged allegiance to its flag every morning in school. Who love their leaders (Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan) either Democrat or Republican as they were understood to have the best interest of the population and the country at heart and not there simply to fill their pockets. I have sadly watched while our educational system has deteriorated into a politically correct nightmare of tenured teachers and professors who are for the most part all progressives spewing their socialistic nonsense to our children. Those children are the majority voting block today. It is what they have planned for the past 100 or more years. Is there any surprise that a fanatical Muslim be allowed to speak at the socialist convention when he denigrates the very country that provides him with the freedom to do that. His son understood. Unfortunately for this speaker he does not. I have traveled the world and done business in a variety of countries. There is no place on this planet like this one. There is a reason why so many around the world want to come here. What they don’t understand is that the reason that we are so successful is that we are not like the county they just left. I am married to a Vietnamese woman. She has memories of the Communist government of Vietnam. My former wife was Russian. Ditto. For those of you who would vote into office a corrupt, lying, despicable
human being because she is a member of your party or is a woman, you will pay for your folly if you are successful.

Second, As you see by my name is Gold Star Mother, I too lost my son in 2007 in Iraq… He want to be a soldier since the age of 3 for the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, at which he did at the age of 20. my Question to Mr Khan is why would you want to exploit you son’s good name at a political convention. But then again I have research Mr Khan as best I could for today :

“Khizr Muazzam Khan graduated in Punjab University Law College, as the New York Times confirms. and he specialized in International Trade Law in Saudi Arabia. An interest lawyer for Islamic oil companies Khan wrote a paper, called In Defense of OPEC to defend the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), an intergovernmental oil company consisting of mainly Islamic countries. Khan is a promoter of Islamic Sharia Law. Khan is also co-founder of the Journal of Contemporary Issues in Muslim Law (Islamic Sharia).
According to a recent report, Khan moved from Pakistan to the United Arab Emirates, a hotbed for the Muslim Brotherhood.

Khan currently runs a law firm in New York City called KM Khan Law Office. According to the website, the the law firm specializes in “immigration services.”
And at one time he was also an attorney for the Clinton Foundation.

so to all, RESEARCH first, then make a call.

oh by the way my son is at Arlington National Cemetery also.
For the Dem’s on hear I feel sorry for you have been brain washed and most Republicans, you need to work harder to find the right balance. we all need to be on our knee’s praying to who ever you prayer with that the USA gets it right for we are are war right here on our own soil.

Thank you for your service. As a disabled vet, I take all veterans issues to heart.

Regardless of how you view the Khan’s appearance at the DNC or the Benghazi mothers’ at the RNC; for me at least, that is secondary to Mr. Trump’s response to Mr. Khan and that alone should disturb everyone equally. An angry, grieving father lashed out at a politician, plain and simple: it has happened before and it will happen again. My concern is Mr. Trump responded at all, and to me it doesn’t matter it happened on prime time television. He is running for President, he doesn’t get to defend himself in the manner he did, by insinuating the mother’s silence reflected negatively on their religion as “some people” were suggesting. Her silence was due to overwhelming grief at seeing her son’s picture and she knew she would not be able to maintain her composure if she attempted to speak. As the mother of a former Soldier and a current Sailor, I can certainly understand that; even 12 years later. He then had to question who wrote Mr. Khan’s speech, this father, as a Harvard law school graduate, was certainly capable of writing it himself. If Mr. Trump felt he needed to address these parents, a simple ‘I’m sorry for your loss and as a parent myself I can’t imagine the pain you have experienced’ would have gone a long way to show him to be the Statesman and leader he wants to be. That would have been the end of it.

This lack of control is what concerns me; he is going to face far more difficult situations than Mr. Kahn – we call it “being called worse by better”. If he can’t control his response to a grieving father, whether politically motivated or not, how is he going to control his response to a head of state’s provocation?

I know “some people” are going to want to argue the Khan’s were only there to stir up trouble or it was Secretary Clinton’s or President Obama’s fault their son was killed, etc. I’ve already read all those arguments. What I am addressing has nothing to do with that. In this case, I’m really interested, Chris, in your and your readers’ opinions with the concern I outlined above.

Chris Mark, Perhaps you should take a lesson from John McCain in humility. Trump does and says anything to make headlines. He is a sociopath. Thank you for yor service, but you are lacking in compassion.

Chris Mark's avatar Chris Mark - August 1, 2016

I am sorry you feel that way. I have compassion for the loss of all service members and those who protect us. My commentary was directed at Mr. Khan’s 2 minute statement…I did my best to explain my thoughts about his son’s service. Nothing more I can do.

Ernest Petefish's avatar 30. Ernest Petefish - August 1, 2016

Thank you brother. I wouldnt have such eloquent words for them as I was furious when I saw that. One thing though… Mr. Trump needs to get some thick skin and not bait so easily.

Agreed. I have been accused of that, as well! 😉

I love this letter. Thank you. As an immigrant, who took seriously my oath of citizenship, I am offended by Mr. Khan’s advice to Mr. Trump to “read the Constitution.” As we have learned today, Mr. Khan is a Muslim activist attorney trying to bring his ilk in the US and supports Sharia Law. He does not BELIEVE in the CONSTITUTION.

HE SHOULD READ THE CONSTITUTION HIMSELF AND UPHOLD HIS OATH OF CITIZENSHIP IF HE IS INDEED A US CITIZEN.

PK's avatar 32. PK - August 1, 2016

Yes ITS MATTERS! when you can only stand like a cock and act the fool, insulting EVERYONE! If the ass had not said he sacrificed like the Khans for our country, hadn’t said he wouldn’t lose voters if he stood on 5th Ave and shot people, after all the horrible shootings we have had, MAY BE not….it’s pure insanity! And you Clinton haters are blinded to this by YOUR hate. HATE WILL NOT TAKE OVER AND DEVOUR OUR COUNTRY, NOT NOW, NOT EVER!

Chris Mark's avatar Chris Mark - August 1, 2016

I am not a Clinton hater but I think she is dishonest and does not represent the US I want to live in. No hate.

Thank you for your remarks Chris I feel the same way who would ask such a grieving mother and father to come on stage and say such things anyway it was all so biased along with the veterans on stage I used to live in Iowa and a few days ago in Iowa City a veteran couldn’t get in the hospital and killed himself so much for taking care of our veterans we know we have all races living in our country and fighting our wars we did not need to hear this we are not idiots I have nothing but compassion for Mr Khan and his family but to use the death of his son to promote a party ??????????? or a belief is wrong

Jayne Crocker's avatar 33. Jayne Crocker - August 1, 2016

Chris, Thank you for your remarks. I too served proudly for my country but mine was some what different. I was a female, single with two teenaged sons. I had to wait until they turned 18 to enlist. That was when I turned 38. I proudly served in the USNR for 8 years defending people that put my armed forces down. My husband of 31 years served the USN for 36 years and we are a proud military family.Thank you for your service and continue to post these true words.

Great letter Chris! That man dared to get up on a stage and use his son and his sons death to try and further a political agenda, is disgusting! This man’s own background isn’t paved with good intentions for our Country. No, nothing could be further from the truth! He is a part of the organization that wants to take our Country from us! It’s the muslim brotherhood he’s entrenched in, with sharia law being at the forefront of his agenda for our Country!
People need to research anyone that uses their own child to further their own political agenda, especially when that child was killed while defending our rights abroad! This happened 12 years ago, long before Trump thought of running for the white house, but his father doesn’t tell you that! I wonder if this man is a citizen of our Great Country, or he is here legally?

You are dead on here, Sir. You don’t need me telling you to ignore or give no weight to the chirping democrat sycophants here. But just know that a great many of us agree with you. What I like most and what I think we have to keep pointing out is the outrageous hypocrisy that comes at all times from the left. The true lefties will never allow themselves to see it. But there is a swath in the middle we can only hope will look at it as we keep pointing it out and conclude they just can’t play along so these bullies will not condescend to them like so many have to you here.

Thank you for your service and speaking up!

I have a question to all you may know, Since Mr Khan’s appearance at the DNC isn’t trying to exploit his son’s sacrifice can you tell me why Wikipedia has this about him, check out where the info came from. But my son and many other are not there (mine also had Purple Heart and Bronze Star)

I am at a loss why you consider the GOP a party supporting veterans. There are more veterans in federal DNC seats than GOP. The GOP has blocked support for veteran needs and when they do vote on military issues it is to give billions in support to their business friends in the MIC.

What I like most about this letter and the other comments I have seen along this line is that they notice that one should not blame others. The problem with this letter and similar comments is they are fraught with misinterpretation, assumption a assumption and fully roited in bias. The Khan family, upon the death of their son, did not rush out to blame anyone that their son had died. They never appeared confused about the fact that their sons service was voluntary. They did not blame those like Clinton that voted for the war. They did not blame any single politician or party for causing the death of their son at any point. If they had, then this letter and similar comments would be poignant, but they did not. This is not a family of blame shifters. They are not seeking to blame a party for the death of their son. They are not seeking to vilify anyone for his voluntary sacrifice, nor are they foolish enough to think that a couple of morons shouting out during a moment of silence means we should hate an entire party. You see, unlike the letter writer and similar commenters they do not make massive assumptions and generalize the actions of a few people. Rather, they have witnessed first hand as has all of America the ugliness that is Donald Trump. The racism that is Donald Trump. And it is this racist dishonoring of their son which was Trumps own personal choice that no one forced him to do that has led them to speak up against Trump. Not because they think Trump caused the death of their son but because Trump dishonors their family and their entire religion. The ongoing generalization by some despite what we have just seen at the conventions and the claim that Democrats do not love the country and our military is insulting beyond words. It is insulting to Democrats that serve or have served and are every ounce as patriotic as our Republican friends. Please stop insulting my family because of generalizations from democratic hippees of days long past. Your analysis is almost so great except for the hefty dose of assumptions and bias from a person who clearly hates the opposite party and who will have nothing change his mind.

Hillary is such a slime ball. I cant believe that she uses this as a political ploy to get votes. What about Bengazi ??? She risked the lives of all those Americans and tried to cover it up. Why would anyone ever put their life on the line under her command. She doesn’t care if you live or die unless it gets her more votes.

Thank you Lacey! Goes along with the territory. I wrote a pretty scathing letter about Sarah Palin. I was called (Gasp) a ‘closet socialist’ ; ‘democrat libtard’ but NEVER what I have been called by the left. I am collecting all the threats and comments. They are both sad and insightful.

Thank you Chris!!! You have said what those of us with common sense feel about Mr. Khan’s speech. Hillary has sacrificed no one. Obama has sacrificed no one. Trump said “a temporary ban until we can find out what is going on”. So if a family like the Khans want to come in under a Trump presidency, they would eventually be let in if they could be vetted. Unfortunately, those supporting Hillary will never admit to what Trump really said. Nor will they admit to all of the laws Hillary broke or the lives lost under her watch. Thank you for your service sir. My husband is an Army Veteran. All of our military and their family make sacrifices daily. Something Hillary knows nothing about either.

Outstanding !! Thank you for your service and addressing this issue . How ironic the democrats criticized Donald Trump for having Patricia Smith speak at the RNC . She is still grieving the unnecessary death of her son in Benghazi and what she had to say is true ! She DOES NOT have deep ties to the government of Saudi Arabia and to international Islamist investors as Mr. Khan has through his law firm !!

J's avatar 48. J - August 1, 2016

Mr. Mark

First, Thank you for your service. How then is your hypocracy any different than Mr. Khan’s. You are calling him out based on the actions of others. Our military has not alwAys been voluntary and my cousin who died in Vietnam would attest to that. You can’t compare mr khan not discussing what happened at other times during the DNC to Mr Trumps comments to him or to Mr. Trumps comments on John Mccain as a POW. The biggest difference is that only one of the two is running to be our president. And I believe our president should be held to a higher standard in their actions. Understanding of course that no matter what a president does a large part of the country will disagree with them

As for sacrifice. Everyone sacrifices in life. Gold star families more than most. But public servants regardless of party do sacrifice for our nation. Regardless what we think of their politics. GW Bush has to live with the fact he’s sent 1000’s to their death in The Middle East as does President Obama. Hillary Clinton was in the discussions to kill Bin Laden and others, the scandals she has gone through and the impact of them. They live with this. I call that a sacrifice. Mr. Trump has to live with his decisions as well. He has sacrificed: his sacrifices in not paying his contractors and his bankruptcies do weigh as heavily on him I’m sure. He has to live with the impact his actions have had on others as well. It is a sacrifice. It is up to each of us as to who we think sacrifices more and for the right reasons.

FD Harris's avatar 49. FD Harris - August 1, 2016

Sir, thank you for your service to our country. Its obvious by your commentary whom your pulling for this election, which is sad. The Democrats, the party of FDR, JFK , LBJ and Jimmy Carter, all of whom served in the Navy during during war and peace and were proud Democrats, yet you claim they have little disregard for men and woman in the military. From what factual basis did you draw this conclusion. Again facts not conjecture or opinion? Mr. Kahn was very impassioned and Nikki Smith accurate in stating that Trump the ultimate con man has never sacrificed a thing for the benefit of this great country that others have paid the ultimate price for. I find it in defensible that any veteran would offer even the hint of support for a man who disparages veterans including one of our own Senator John McCain who served proudly as a naval aviator and endured years of captivity and torture while Trump cavorted in his social circles playing soldier at a military school.
For him to imply that Muslims be banned from this country while they try to figure things out is not only wrong unconstitutional and goes against the very basis for which this country was founded and stand for. Despite his backtracking and rhetoric this is a dangerous man and any veteran who supports him diminishes their character. What is respect your service and your sacrifice there’s nothing to respect about Trump. When your own party turns its back on you and only offers keep it endorsements or tries to not mention your name in defense of your words and actions that says a lot. Again thank you for your service but I think you should do a little more research before posting comments that seem to be favor a unqualified, insensitive , thin skinned bully.

I’m shocked that you would defend Donald Trump attacking the military, service men and women who die in service to this nation, and gold star families. Remember, this is a man who attacked the service of Senator McCain too.
