Please read “An Apology to Mr. Khan, Mrs. Smith & Gold Star Families”

Dear Mr. Khan,

I want to preface this letter by stating that I respect your son’s sacrifice for this great nation.  By all accounts, he is a true hero that sacrificed himself in service to our country. For that I am thankful.

As a veteran, I watched your comments at the Democratic National Convention with a mixture of sadness, and anger.  The United States has a military comprised of volunteers.  Every single member has made the conscious choice to join the military and serve.  There is not a single service member who has been forced into service.  It is important for all service members (and apparently, their families) to understand that service to this great nation does not imbue one with special privileges or rights.  I found your comments troubling when you said: “Have you ever been to Arlington cemetery? Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America. You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and no one.”

Does it matter whether Mr. Trump has sacrificed “…nothing and no one?”…has Ms. Clinton “..sacrificed” for this nation?  How about Mr. Obama?   Your comment stating that Mr. Trump “…has sacrifice no one” is alarming.  Are you intimating that YOU sacrificed?  Sir, your son willingly sacrificed himself.   As a father I cannot imagine the pain you must feel but his sacrifice is his own.  He was not forced to serve.

I am troubled that you would allow a party that has little more than contempt for the US Service Member to parade you into the DNC to denounce Donald Trump.  Did you watch when protesters at the DNC booed and heckled Medal of Honor recipient  Capt. Florent Groberg? Did you notice your party interrupting the moment of silence for slain police officers?  Your own hypocrisy in not denouncing these acts and instead using the DNC as a platform to make a political point is disgraceful.  The simple fact is that whether one served or sacrificed does not give greater power to their statements.  One vote is as valuable as another.  That sir, is why our Country is great.  Your condemnation of one person for a statement while standing idly as your party disparages veterans and police officers is the height of hypocrisy.

To conflate the need to prevent potential terrorists from entering our country with the belief that ‘all Muslims’ should be banned is simply wrong and disingenuous. As a reminder, Mr. Trump said: ” “Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life,” The irony of your son’s own death at the hands of these very people in Iraq should not be ignored.  I have little doubt that your son would have recognized the need to protect our country from these very people.  In fact, he held is own troops back so that he could check on a suspicious car.  Your son understood sacrifice and how to protect “his people”…’his soldiers’….’his fellow Americans’…

As you continue to make the media circuit and bask in the glow of affection cast upon you by a party that has little regard for your son’s own sacrifice, and veterans in general, I would ask you to consider your comments and your position more closely.

Respectfully,

Chris Mark

US Marine and Navy Veteran.

Mr. Mark-

Your political slant is obvious, so you really cannot be objective in this manner. If this man was not Muslim, you likely would have responded differently. Again, my opinion, but you would probably would not react this way to a blond, blue-eyed American father. When “liberals” comment here and give you valid points, you attack their spelling, punctuation, or simply say “Go home.” You don’t try and discuss the issues they raise, but take the easy way out. You decided to post this letter, so be a man and actually support your opinions with facts. All the congressional hearings, which were a huge waste of taxpayer dollars, exonerated Mrs. Clinton (it didn’t go unnoticed that you had the courtesy to address Mr. Trump as Mr., but addressed Mrs. Clinton as Hillary, even though she is a former First Lady and Secretary of State). I thank you for your service, but if you want to post a public letter, using your service for credibility and to garner respect, you are no different than Mr. Khan.

I already know your response. Go home. I am home.

Hmm… I find it difficult to read about hypocrisy from an obvious Republican… My friend… You need to check your facts… I am a psychologist for a large healthcare system that must remain unnamed due to fears about the Hatch Act… Anyway while you are correct in stating that Your Party supports its active service members you could not be any more wrong about their support once you are broken and no longer of use to them! I do not have to elaborate… Just ask any one of your medically discharged friends… The bucks stop when you hit the exit door! That sir is the definition of hypocrisy. Obama said that if you went to a combat zone you don’t have to prove to anyone you have experienced trauma… His Republican predecessor insisted on spending millions of dollars making sure you didn’t dare get one thin dime he thought you might not deserve despite seeing your friends killed and your life being changed forever… Again my friend the very definition of hypocrisy!

So you don’t know the difference between someone like Mr. Mark who volunteered to serve his country and the _PARENTS OF_ someone who volunteered to serve his country?
Displaying such ignorance is not a very good way to end your missive…it casts serious doubt on any of the other “points” you’ve attempted to make.

Nate Thomas .. Chris Mark’s message was spot on .. You sir mentioned that if Mr. Kahn wasn’t Muslim possible Chris Mark’s message would have been different .. If Mr. Kahn wasn’t Muslim, the Liberals wouldn’t have had up on the stage .. Since your so blind and ignorant to the facts, Sir you tell be how you look at a Muslim and determine if he is a Good Muslim or a Bad Muslim .. There is no way of determining that… If there was, don’t you believe that Italy and Germany would have kept the bad out ?? There is no way and that is all Donald Trump is saying .. Until we can determine who is who we must stop the immigration .. Take a survey sir in the foreign countries that have accepted them and see if they would do it the same all over again .. Your the one that had better wake up and look at what out future holds for our kids and grand kids .. I don’t want to see my family killed by “The Bad Muslim”

Perhaps you should reread the letter. It clearly says Ms. Clinton and Mr. Obama. But you probably didn’t bother to notice because you were too busy slandering someone for no reason. Such is the Democratic way. Hell I don’t think you bothered to read his letter at all. Every point he makes is valid. And before you claim that “my political slant is obvious”, I’ll just let you know, I support neither. Unlike the rest of you I am not blinded by left or right.

You are an articulate person and I mean no disrespect, but many are lost in the “weeds” and may not see the danger in the “forest”. Mrs. Clinton is not a good human being. God bless you Chris, and thank you for your service. Thank you for this letter and your insightful comments. I am sure there are many of us out here who feel the same way. Since the initial speech by Mr. Khan he as also said, in an interview, that Islam has nothing to do with terror. How can he believe that when his own son was killed by Islamic terrorists? I have read several comments here and elsewhere about his ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and Sharia law, so can only conclude that he is just another radical Muslim hoping to overthrow our Constitutional law in favor of Sharia in the US.
Keep spredding the word!

Scarlett Rabalais's avatar 6. Scarlett Rabalais - August 1, 2016

Chris very well said. Here is another article regarding Mr Kahn’s DNC speech that is also wonderful.

To the Muslim Gold Star father that spoke at the DNC…..I have some thoughts on your comments. I am a Blue Star mother. My deepest condolences on the loss of your son. No family should have to endure such a loss. That being said….while your son is a hero, you Sir, are NOT. My son has served three tours of combat in the countries you and your family came from. Iraq and Afghanistan were his introduction to adulthood and service to something bigger than our individual selves. He was blown up by an IED set by your countrymen. His Purple Heart is a testament to his love of America and our freedoms. I have suffered through his multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan….never knowing from moment to moment if he would return home in a flag draped coffin. It is torture when a mother wakes up to this day after day and sees the atrocities happening over there on the news and being helpless to change a thing. My comments to you will probably offend you. I do not apologize. These things need to be said. Unlike you, I could NEVER use my son’s death as a pawn piece in support of a woman that left “America’s treasure” (Hillarys words) to die unaided in Benghazi. The same woman that says vile things to her military details there to protect her. You, Sir, are supposed to be a witness to your son’s bravery and sacrifice. Instead you stood on a stage and promoted the woman that upholds the very people that killed your son. You became a political PAWN that promotes pandering to our enemy. You desecrated your son’s memory by your words. You did not utter one word of outrage at anyone but Donald Trump. Are you forgetting that Trump did not kill your son. He had nothing whatsoever to do with these wars. His memory should mean more to you than five minutes of fame on the stage of the party that voted to send your son to war. The same party that for eight years has denied and cheated our veterans out of their deserved medical care. Who for the last three years has cut our veterans pay. Of note…your wife stood SILENT. She stood with her head covered, never uttering a word about her loss. She submitted to you being her voice in front of the country. She abdicated her free voice to you…..as would any good Sharia wife and mother. Let me say, this was not lost on the other American military moms….myself included. Had it been my son being “used” as a political PROP, no one could have silenced me. I would be voicing my grief, my pride, my love of him to the world. A man cannot speak to a mothers loss. No man knows her heart at the loss of a child. She did her heroic son a disservice by her silence. She should have uncovered her head and her heart to be the American mother you claim. And last if all….you dared to flash your picket Constitution and ask if Trump has read it. I dare to ask you, Sir….HAVE YOU READ IT? If you say yes, then I dare ask you HOW you could represent that party? HOW can you support this woman? How can you affiliate your family with a party and candidate that cannot even call the radicals that killed your son what they are? How can you support a current administration that diminishes your son’s death by denying he had an enemy? And if you have read our Constitution, how could you cover your soulmate in colorful submissive sheets and have the audacity to speak FOR her? Your son died for that Constitution you so carelessly waved around on national TV in support of the very party that exists to destroy it. As a soldier’s mother….NO ONE could ever speak for me. I find your outrage artificial. I find your party affiliation offensive. I find your wife’s silence atrocious and offensive. I find YOU a political FOOL. I find your son to have been your greatest accomplishment, and you, Sir, have dishonored him. I hope you memorize that picket constitution so you will understand what it means to be a REAL American and hero. You are not one. You were USED. Your son WOULD NOT be proud of you. My only hope is that when MY son goes a fourth time to combat radical Islamic terrorist’s, ( and he WILL) he will know that his mother never stood submissively SILENT about an American hero. Yes, your son was a hero that could not be manipulated but, you, Sir, are a weak minded FOOL. I would love to hear your thoughts this morning about the 1500 American soldiers on the air base in Turkey being held as basic hostages as I type. Not a word from this president or party you adore…or the media that so thoroughly manipulated and used you and your wife. So…what say you Sir??? What will you say to a Blue and Gold Star family if these heroes die? In my opinion, you will say NOTHING.

Watch as Chris shows the ability to tally the amount of responses in regards to racism- yet he hasn’t the ability to recognize it himself. There may be a theme here, sir.

Let me take a wild guess without researching any further- you also have major issues with BLM and continue to say it isn’t based on your own bias (racism).

The point is- Trump labels Muslims as terrorists. Ignoring a large part of our military is composed of Muslim Americans.

The convenience of this is what prompts people to call out your racism. It’d be a step out on a ledge to say they’re incorrect in their assumptions.

You dragged the conversation into deep political territory instead of understanding grieving. I am frankly disappointed. It seems you ought to become a human first and soldier second.

Most of these people have no regard for life. They would rather die than live. The Government finally declared that this was Domestic Terrorism. Is this what you want here in the US.

There’s a considerable difference between being allowed to carry a gun and having a constitutional right to have one. Our founding Fathers ensured our right via The 2nd Amendment and constantly through their papers reminds the Government (The Powers that be) we have a constitutional right to overthrow them which is why Obama & Hillary are pushing hard to disarm us. They have a deadline to meet mandated by the United Nations by the end of 2016. We are the last remaining Country in the world that allows it’s citizens the legal right to bear arms. Rest assured that will ‘NEVER’ happen without another Revolutionary War which is why Obama has U.N Military stationed across the U.S. ‘WAKE UP AMERICA’.

If you haven’t noticed, so many who claim to be for the prople and the betterment of society, tend to be the most closeminded, blind to corruption, the nastiest and often most vulgar in their responses. I too am a combat vet (US NAVY – DESERT SHIELD AND DESERT STORM). Also keep in mind that a civilian can never understand how we feel and why, because they’ve never experienced combat. I call bullshit Chris but will first tell you to read the Hatch Act. You just violated it and have been reported for doing so.

You are just another political wannabe hack. You cite Mr. Trumps only rational comment on Muslims. What about, “On 9/11: ‘Thousands and thousands of people were cheering.” or “A total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” or “I think Islam hates us” or “I think we do need to track Muslims in America even if they are citizens, at least until we can check them out.”

Boo for Capt. Florent Groberg? Again I call bullshit on your assertion and on your link. Chanting no more war has nothing to do with heckling him. They cheered him. He stole the show. But your Fox and Friends like to spin and make shit up.

The fact that you can type Marine after your name does not imply in any way that you have a clue what you are talking about. Your writings only affirm your love of party over country. Maybe you should stick to what you know.

And one last thought. I missed your open letter when turds like Sarah Palin trotted out her son’s service every ten seconds. Where were you then? Oh, but wait, when it fits your world view its cool. Right?

Again, maybe you should stick to what you understand and try reading the Hatch Act.

Just because you have examples of you targeting people who are not people of color or are a “white American” does not eliminate you from being racist. That argument is a red herring. Being a veteran does not give you a free pass to be be ignorant and expect no recourse from it. I have never, EVER heard of a veteran, or someone who has been lost in combat, having their parents chastised for speaking out. If you cannot see why they felt the need to speak out with all the hate and slander Trump spews then you live a charmed life. Unfortunately, I have watched friends and colleagues suffer due to the rise in intollerance toward Muslims, and I am saddened by it every day.

You should be ashamed of yourself. You should know better. You should know that Muslims are the most victimized by ISIL and the attacks in the middle East. You should know compassion for seeing loss, not only amongst your brothers and sisters in arms, but watching their families grieve. I am ashamed for you.

Chris Mark's avatar Chris Mark - August 1, 2016

“Until we…” is a classic. Just about every power grab is sold with an “until we…”, and the condition tends to stick around until some next power grab. There should never be an excuse to put fundamental rights/ principals on hold because of some (small but powerful) slice of the population thinks it would be for the better for the rest of us.

I’m not a US citizen. But I thank you for your service. I also really hope you look at Trump very closely and honestly and think about whether that man really stands for the freedom you signed up for to defend. Personally, I think Trump fits a pretty standard profile of an autocrat. There should be enough checks and balances in the US democracy to keep it alive under his rule, but I am convinced he could (and probably will) do some serious damage to it, whether it will be via imposing his will on the judicial system, silencing journalists, or all the other things he’s been suggesting he’d like to do even now, when he’s not in power yet.

brotherhood. If you don’t know what that is, and run your mouth w/o reading what exactly their “plan” is, then you are nothing but sheep being led to slaughter.
Yep, I feel sorry for his son—at least he was given respect for his service.
But for him? This man AND ALL WHO ARE MEMBERS OF THE BROTHERHOOD WANT TO CUT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY’S HEADS OFF!
AND SHE INVITED HIM ON STAGE TO GAIN YOUR SUPPORT!
Think about what your family’s heads would look like on a pole—ever seen something like THAT before? It”s not pretty.

Chris, thank you for your service to our country. Your response to Mr. Khan was excellent. I honor the sacrifice of his son who was murdered by Muslims. The fact that he was killed in 2004 is a relevant issue. Also, when he came to the USA with his parents, he was 2 years old. The world was different.
Clinton and Obama are responsible for the chaos in the Middle East NOW!
I wonder what Mr. Khan’s thoughts were when Clinton said “what difference, at this point, does it make” when confronted by her lie about Benghazi. How does he feel about Clinton lying to the families, at Dover, over the coffins carrying the bodies of 4 Americans who Clinton failed to protect.
James Comey let Clinton off the hook. Why?

Great comment, I think America at the minute needs a leader with some balls, as does Britain, for years now any Brit that says any negative feedback towards Muslims or any other minority is branded a racist… But on the home office stats it is an overwhelming fact that the majority of inmates are a minority.. So how is stating fact being racist.. I would love in a society where we ”all get along” but it’s not happening.. I’ve seen the same in the U.S. As a dual national I spent 6 years over there, my father worked for the D.O.J and had to endure affirmative action policies that in my mind is ludicrous.. But hey what do know

No, they didn’t. They live to remember their son and the good man he was, that’s a gift, not a sacrifice. Their son chose to sacrifice, at best his parents were along for the ride. That doesn’t mean it was fun, but you don’t know what it means to choose to sacrifice.

Fred Speckmann's avatar Fred Speckmann - August 1, 2016

Re: Craig Davey,

You sir, are way out of line, either because you are unable to understand the point Mr. Mark was making or simply because you are a liberal twit.

Mr. Mark’s point was that Capt Khan was a volunteer member of the military as are all others that volunteered. Therefore, not being forced to join, Capt. Khan took it upon himself to risk his life in the service of his country and no sacrifice was asked or demanded of him or his parents.

Mr. Mark was perfectly respectful of the parents sorrow at the loss of their son, but objected to their politicization of their loss in the service of the democrat party and their leader, Hillary Clinton who have never shown respect for the military, police or any other first responders of this nation that put their lives at risk on a daily basis.

Neither Mr. Mark nor I have disrespect for the Khan’s loss, only for the manner they used it to disparage trump. I write this with the full acknowledgement that mrr. Trump is certainly not my first, second or even third choice for president, but to choose Clinton would be choosing a corrupt woman beyond any previous level of corruption and disrespect for the military.
