onkillingRecently a man attacked and wounded 10 people at Ohio State University.    As we approach the holiday seasons where gifts are exchanged I am hopeful that I can shed some light on killing and violence and the real issues that influence violence in our society.

“I left the sky in the middle of the night
I hit the deck and I’m ready to fight.
Colt .45 and Kabar by my side
These are the tools that make men die.”

This post is not a position on gun control rather it is intended give some insight into a side of the issue few outside of specialized jobs probably recognize or acknowledge.  That of the human weapon.

There is an expression every Marine learns in Basic Training.  “The most dangerous weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle.”  Without justifying the statement (we Marines are very good at self-promotion), the statement is insightful and applies equally to the Rangers, Airborne, SEALS, RM Commandos or any other combat troop.  (more…)

After killing Osama Bin Laden in 2011, the US embarked on a mission to remove any heir apparants that may have been waiting in the wings.  With this weeks’ killing of Abu Yahya al-Libi, the US has now killed 4 of the top 5 candidates for the #2 spot in Al Qeada.  Like any company in need of a new C-level to support their operations, the terrorist organization is now looking for a new #2 for their organization.   There are at least five names believed to be considered with several who have lived in the US and one American being considered.  While likely a very good job for an up and coming terrorist, it should be noted that one major job responsibility is probably going to include getting blown up by Hellfire missiles.

The Combating Terrorism Center at West Point has published a number of declassified documents taken from the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.  You can access the documents here.

CNN terrorism analyst Peter Bergen had access to some of the materials while researching his new book, “Manhunt: The Ten Year Search for Bin Laden from 9/11 to Abbottabad.”

“The documents paint a portrait of a man who was simultaneously an inveterate micromanager, but was also someone almost delusional in his belief that his organization could still force a change in American foreign policies in the Muslim world if only he could get another big attack” in the United States, Bergen said on CNN.com this week.
