“Honoring the Silent Professionals”
I am honored to announce the formation of a new charitable organization called the R&S Foundation. The R&S Foundation (named for Recon & Sniper) was formed to help our veteran Brothers and Sisters in need. Many are unaware that 22 veterans commit suicide per day. Many more struggle with physical, emotional and financial challenges. The Recon, Scout/Sniper, SARC, and MARSOC communities are in need of a foundation to help those who are in need of support. The R&S Foundation was born of a simple idea. Several years ago a Reconnaissance Sniper created a loose affiliation of Snipers, Recon Marines, SARCs, and MARSOC Marines which began informally helping each other. From this seed of an early idea some brothers from the community took the proverbial bull by the horns and created the R&S Foundation. Currently, the group is putting together the ‘non profit’ packet and have seated the Board of Directors (I am privileged to have been asked to be on the BOD). If you get a chance, please take a look at the Facebook page and give us a ‘like’. You can reach the Foundation by emailing; info@reconsniperfoundation.org

While I was serving as a Reconnaissance Marine in 1996, I was asked if I was interested in an opportunity to work with the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) on some counter sniper technology that was being developed? Since I was also a Marine Scout/Sniper with combat experience as a sniper, I was told I was a good fit. I jumped at the opportunity to make some per diem, and screw around at Ft. Benning during the Summer Olympics, which were being held in Atltanta (about an hour away).
There were numerous systems and we spent our days shooting, trying to beat the
systems, writing reports on our findings, and talking trash with all of the bearded PhD engineers who built the cool toys that we could break. It was immensely fun. In 1996, the technology was in its infancy and the computer processing power was not yet well enough defined to make the systems very effective. There was one system that we evaluated that struck a chord with the snipers. It was based upon a series of sensors that ‘heard’ the supersonic crack of the bullet as it passed between the sensors. It would use basic time differences and triangulate the position of the shot and, using basic trigonometry, it could calculate where the shot originated, the caliber, and other factors. Ultimately we gave it good reviews and the DARPA representative code named it “Bullet Ears” (yeah..I am not making this up)..
Today I was reading an article by Steve Reichert (the Marine Sniper with the Mile long shot and three kills with one shot) titled DARPA’s XM3 Sniper Rifle. In the article, it references a sniper detection system named ‘Boomerange’ by Raytheon’s BBN Systems. Imagine my surprise when I checked out the system and realized it was the actual finished version of “Bullet Ears” we had tested almost 20 years ago!…It has been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan…Wow. To think it has actually saved lives. That is very cool to think that a technology we tested in 1996 is saving lives in 2014…

So I just had an opportunity to catch up with an old Marine buddy named Jason. Jason owns Straight8 Photography. He is a retired
Recon Marine and was an instructor with me at the Basic Reconnaissance Course in late 1990’s. As I am talking, he mentions that his wife owns CombatBet. I couldn’t believe it! CombatBet is the “new” challenge coin. For those unfamiliar, ‘challenge coins” have been around for years and are coins carried by people in units that identify their membership etc. (too much history to explain). Long and short, it sucks to carry 10 coins to hand out. They are also expensive and not super customizable. I have been handed a half dozen of these over the last couple of years and didn’t know who was behind them! If you are looking for either a great photo or some kick ass poker chips, you have to take a spin by Straight8 Photography or CombatBet.com…BTW…if the pic looks familiar it is Jason with his daughter and was in the scrolling credits of Act of Valor…courtesy of Straight8…
